Piloting Remote Eye Screening with SEC between DRC and Japan
OUI Inc. is pleased to announce that we started pilot-project of remote eye screening with our Smart Eye Camera (SEC), connecting Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Japan.
This Pilot is being conducted in collaboration with SOIK Corporation (SOIK), a medical startup based in DRC, which provides medical solutions using portable IOT devices for the patients in DRC.
Medical Staffs from SOIK at the site capture the ophthalmic images of the patients through SEC, share the images to the ophthalmologist in Japan via the SEC Application, the ophthalmologist in Japan evaluates the images and sends the result of the evaluation to DRC via the SEC Application. The detected patients are recommended to go to eye clinic for further consultation and medical solution.
As the first phase of the pilot, the screening was provided to 20 patients in Kenge, Kwango Province, located in the west part of DRC from February 4 to 7, 2022.
As a result, Eye diseases were found in about 1/3 of the patients (6 patients) and we could recommend them to go to eye clinic for further consultation and medical solution. The patients were very satisfied with the results.
Through these pilots, OUI Inc. is going to create a model to prevent treatable and preventable blindness and visual impairment by detecting patients with early stage of the diseases, and then connecting them to medical consultation and treatment by the local ophthalmologists.
OUI Inc. will continue to work with a variety of domestic and international partners to spread the SEC both domestically and internationally, with the goal of reducing global blindness by 50% by 2025.
