Smart Eye Camera has been registered as medical device in Vietnam!
OUI Inc. is pleased to announce that our Smart Eye Camera (SEC), a smartphone-attachment medical device for diagnosing anterior segment of the eye, has been registered as a medical device in Vietnam.
About Smart Eye Camera (SEC)
OUI Inc. is a medial startup founded in July 2016 by ophthalmologists from Keio University School of Medicine. We invented and developed Smart Eye Camera, an smartphone-attachment medical device utilizing light source and camera function of the smartphone, with which performs the equal function to the conventional slit-lamp microscope.
Cataracts are the most common cause of blindness in the world. The SEC is a compact medical device that attaches to the smartphones, making it possible to perform eye examinations in any location, including areas without electricity and disaster areas.
About our activities in Vietnam
OUI Inc. envisions to overcome world blindness by 50% by 2025 through delivering appropriate diagnosis to the patients who suffer difficulty in access to eye care through SEC.
To date, we have conducted various pilot projects in more than 20 countries around the world, including Asia and Africa, in cooperation with local ophthalmologists, NGOs, medical institutions, and international organizations.
The idea for SEC was originally born in Vietnam, where OUI Inc. founders and ophthalmologists Dr. Shimizu, Dr. Yazu, and Dr. Aketa participate in eye camp annually in rural areas of Vietnam as members of the NPO Fight For Vision (FFV).
They came up with the idea for SEC after seeing a local staff trying to examine a patient’s eye using the light from a smartphone at the rural clinic with no ophthalmic equipment and no ophthalmologist.
Since its invention, the SEC has been used for pre and post-operative consultations during FFV’s volunteer activities for free cataract surgeries in rural areas of Vietnam.
The SEC was registered as a medical device in Japan in June 2019, in the European market in June 2021 to comply with CE marking, and in Kenya in October 2021, and has now been registered in Vietnam.
Taking the opportunity of this medical device registration, we will strengthen our cooperation with ophthalmologists and medical institutions in Vietnam and strive to overcome preventable/curable blindness in Vietnam and all over the world.
